TITLE: Investor wanted for a Maine raft cultured mussel farming company
SYNOPSIS:
Established mussel raft aquaculture business seeking capital to increase production in order to achieve profitability. Operates 4 farms in mid-coast Maine with production potential of 400,000 pounds ($600,000) per year. Currently owner-operated.
PROPOSAL SUMMARY:
We are looking for an investor to provide working capital for Pemaquid Mussel Farms in Maine. We need funds to invest in seeding in 5 of our mussel rafts in order to increase production to meet market demand. Our business plan, based on 3 years of operation, indicates profit with sales over $200,000 per year but we have not achieved our production potential due to lack of funds for seeding expenses. We would also like the investor to join the owner operators as a financial/business management adviisor.
Mussel farms are in S. Bristol, Northport, Stonington and Lamoine, Maine and are the highest quality, sustainable mussel available. Operations include a 60 foot, 30 ton harvest and processing barge Mumbles, 10 mussel rafts (35 ton capacity each), 30 miles of pegged ropes, predator nets and mooring systems. In order to protect from storm losses on two of our semi-exposed sites, we are also developing a new technology, a submersible mussel raft, for our own use and for export to other mussel producing areas worldwide. We are also investigating polyculture on all 4 farms growing marine kelp, with opportunities for expansion 0n 6 acres of our lease sites in 2012-2013.
We are responsible for the development of mussel raft culture in Maine, which started in 1998, and Mumbles has already produced over 2 million pounds of rope cultured mussels. Now, as owner operators, we are trying to build our inventory to achieve our full production potential.
The advantages to investing in our company are that we have all the resources necessary to achieve our production goals, we have actual costs of business itemized in quickbooks for development of detailed financial plans, we have an expert production and sales team, and are just lacking investment capital and some business management expertise. Through increases in efficiency, we have recently reduced our labor cost (our highest cost) by 40%. Increasing our production volume to meet market demand will result in further cost reductions and higher profitability.
MANAGEMENT TEAM:
Carter Newell, Ph.D., expert on mussel aquaculture, 30 years of experience, boat captain. Also successful recipient of 3 Phase 2 SBIR's, publisher of over 30 peer reviewed papers in aquaculture, shellfish physiology, and modeling, Peter Fischer, 30 years seafood sales, three experienced crew. Tim Levesque, boat builder and operator of 70 foot FV Thunder Bay. Minority partners: Pemaquid Oyster Company, a high quality oyster farm and seafood wholesaler, and John Richardson, President of Blue Hill Hydraulics, a hydraulic engineer. The president, C. Newell, is also president of Pemaquid Oyster Company and works with Blue Hill Hydraulics on marine-GIS, flow modelling, and environmental consulting work.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT:
Buy 25% of the stock in PMF for $50,000. We expect $10,000 to go into cash flow (which is our current accounts receivables), $25,000 to go into seeding our rafts in 2012 (cost of labor and biodegradable cotton for seeding 4-5 rafts), and $15,000 to go into maintenance and machinery upgrades for our harvest vessel (which originally cost $360,000 new in 2000).
